#92: A Famous Road

I love the easy ones! We practically live on Historic Route 66. In fact, my grandparents did live just off the Mother Road, and I remember travelling this famous highway when I was a child. We could have taken the turnpike to Tulsa, but my grandfather loved the scenic route. Our family has already driven on Route 66 numerous times this summer, but two of our destinations on our scavenger hunt took us to famous landmarks along the highway. Just east of Edmond lies the town of Arcadia, a town so small that you would miss it if it weren't for the famous Round Barn and a giant lighted soda bottle.

The Round Barn was constructed in 1898 and was originally home to livestock and town dances. While other barns of its time were hexagonal or octagonal, this barn's roof was constructed with a dome design in hopes that it would better withstand Oklahoma tornadoes. The barn stood watch over Route 66 for many years, but the roof finally collapsed in 1988, after many years of neglect. Over the next 4 years, volunteers restored the barn by donating their time, money, and skills. Today, the loft of the barn is rented out for parties, weddings, or other events, while the lower level is a sort of museum and gift shop. An older man named Butch has hand-crafted a variety of "unique gifts" and "other great things you might not find anywhere else", or so the website boasts. I'll let you decide.

On Route 66 there is a lot of famous places. The ones I've visited are the round barn and Pops. The round barn is cool. On the top floor, there is a big open space with a wooden floor. If you look up, the round dome on top looks like a basket that was weaved together, but it's huge! My grandmother told me that she went there one time because there was a dance that was going on. I think it would be really fun to dance in the top of the round barn! It would be so cool!!!!!

There is a round barn in Oklahoma, and it has a gift shop. In the gift shop, there was a toy car made out of Coca-Cola cans. The place upstairs has windows and benches. A place in the middle is wood and is shaped like a stop sign. I think it's used for talking, singing, dancing, or boxing.
